Parish Gathering
As indicated in Cardinal Brady’s pastoral letter in Advent, it is hoped to have meetings within all parishes in the Archdiocese of Armagh to evaluate the progress of the Diocesan Pastoral Plan and to reflect on developments within each parish and pastoral area. In our case this meeting will take place on Monday 13 February in St Patrick’s Primary School at 8pm. This will be an open meeting, facilitated by a visitor; it will last a little over an hour and will afford parishioners an opportunity to learn of pastoral initiatives within the diocese and to consider the implications for our parish. I hope the meeting will be well attended and I encourage parishioners to come along.

This ecumenical spirituality programme, based on the loving beatitudes, explores how we can transform our attitude to life and our use of language, no matter how difficult or hard life may seem, moving us from a place of darkness to one where it is an ‘opportunity'.
Although the journey from scarcity to abundance is challenging, the tools are powerful, and the vision of what life can be, is inspiring.
Eucharistic Congress
The opening liturgy of the 50th International Eucharistic Congress will take place on Sunday 10 June in the Arena at the Royal Dublin Society (RDS) on the feast of Corpus Christi.
The Mass will be celebrated, with pilgrims gathering from all over Ireland and overseas. RTE will broadcast the opening Mass from the RDS on television and online.
The daily programme for the 50th International Eucharistic Congress from 11 until 16 June will take place in the Royal Dublin Society (RDS).
On most days the programme will be in the afternoon and will include:
The Catechesis: a “teaching” moment, usually presented by a bishop, reflecting on the theme of the day and its challenges.
The Testimony: words of encouragement and inspiration from a lay-person with a story of faith to tell.
Celebration of the Eucharist: Mass celebrated with all the Congress delegates.
The closing liturgy, referred to as Statio Orbis, will take place in Croke Park on Sunday 17 June.
People can book to attend the Congress for seven days, three days or one day. There will be further information about such arrangements from our Pastoral Area.
An International Eucharistic Congress normally takes place somewhere in the world every four years. The last one was held in Toronto, Canada in 2008. A Congress is a great universal gathering of people which aims to:
-
Promote an awareness of the central place of the Eucharist in the life and mission of the Church;
-
Help and improve our understanding and celebration of the liturgy;
-
Draw attention to the social dimension of the Eucharist.
The 50th International Eucharistic Congress will take place in Dublin at the RDS starting on Monday 11th June 2012 and culminating with a closing liturgy in Croke Park on Sunday 17th June. The theme will be “The Eucharist: Communion with Christ and with one another”. The week-long programme of events linking faith and culture will have a particular focus on the gathering of people of every nation, language and way of life around the table of the Lord.
The only other time when an International Eucharistic Congress was held in Ireland was 1932. Anyone still alive today, who attended that Congress eighty years ago, will be afforded a special invitation to Dublin in June 2012. In the coming weeks you will find a selection of photographs from the 1932 Congress in the glass notice board at the back of St Patrick’s Church, Dungannon. These remind us of a very different Church in a country that was discovering its new found independence. As one journalist waxed eloquently, “Today Ireland is as a light to the earth, and an example to be followed by every race”.

Vocations
Have you ever considered a vocation to the priesthood or religious life? The journey of discernment is not an easy one. Just like the two men on the road to Emmaus from today’s Gospel, we often need God’s help to remind us of all the good God has done for us.
For opportunities to explore your vocation, please contact Fr. Peter McAnenly Tel (028) 8772 2906 or Eileen Linehan, Vocations Ireland Tel 00 353 1 668 995.
